Two weeks remain before the most important election in our lifetime. As tea party members we have much at stake. Recently while on a talk show I was asked how I would respond to the statement that Mitt Romney is not conservative enough. I responded that I believe tea party members don’t live in the world of theory but rather facts and logic.

Some of the facts are:

In 2010 the tea party had a direct effect on the rejection of the Obama agenda. It was because of the energy of the tea party that Republicans won a historical election in the House of Representatives. Most of the newly elected Republicans ran on the principles of the tea party. Allen West is one of many who have become a favorite of tea party members This tsunami of an election removed Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House.

Republicans also picked up seats in the Senate with strong tea party favorites Ron Johnson in Wisconsin, Mike Lee of Utah, and Mike Crapo in Idaho winning.

We have been told since 2010 that Republican control of the House is only 1/3 of the Government and therefore very little can be done fiscally while control of the Senate and the Executive branch is in the hands of Democrats.

While there may exist some Democrats who believe in fiscal responsibility (there must be one somewhere), it is absolutely certain this won’t happen under the current leadership of the Democratic Party. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are not your grandfather’s Democrats. Only if a new generation of Democrats comes to the forefront will fiscal restraint and limited government be part of their platform. Currently a continued slide towards socialism is the preference of Democrats at a national level.

The choice of Paul Ryan as Romney’s VP candidate was a bold choice and hopefully a signal to tea party members that Romney is serious about the fiscal challenges facing our country. Ryan says often on the campaign that the Romney administration will not duck the tough issues but instead will lead, that they will reapply constitutional principles to the scope of government.

Together, we have worked for 3 years to reach the point where President Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi are defeated and repudiated. I ask, have you done absolutely all you can do over the past few months to make this happen? Will you put in extra effort over these last 13 days to assure the results we all know are necessary to have any chance to save America as we know it? Will you be able to look in the mirror the morning after the election and tell yourself regardless of result that you did everything you possibly could to give America a fighting chance to once again achieve it’s intended destiny?

We all know from history politician’s rhetoric does not always lead to the promised activity. President Obama promised to fundamentally change the United States of America and is in the process of doing so. He must be defeated, Harry Reid’s leadership in the Senate must be defeated, and we must give Romney/Ryan the keys to the car.

When we started this journey our goal was to elect people to federal and state offices who recognize the seriousness of our fiscal situation and were willing to solve these problems rather than continue to kick the can down the road. We wanted people who are more concerned with the future of America than their reelection. The defeat of this administration and it’s fellow comrades is a must to continue that journey.

As Winston Churchill might have said, “The defeat of President Obama is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” We must all do everything possible in the time remaining to give America and our children a chance at a new beginning. Let us do what we can to make sure Obama and his fellow Democrats lose every county in our state on November 6th. Then we will turn our focus to those newly in charge and say to them NO EXCUSES.

Leon Francis, President of NDTPC, says, “The citizens of North Dakota will do our part to assure this President does not fundamentally transform America as he has stated is his goal.”

Everything is big in Texas. The Astrodome, longhorn steers, cowboy hats, and now Dallas Cowboy stadium are examples of living large in Texas. Last night Texas did a very BIG thing in politics and for the future of our country. Ted Cruz, a tea party candidate, defeated David Dewhurst who had the backing of the powerful party establishment including the governor Rick Perry.

Constitutional loyalists rather than party loyalists have been winning at an ever increasing rate, so much so that it can no longer be considered a fluke. It cannot, however, be overstated what a major significance this victory is for the conservative movement. Texas is big-time Republican and with that comes a comparable power grip on the happenings inside the Republican Party by the Party establishment. Ted Cruz overcame those odds in just a few short months with a ton of help from grassroots activists and the resources of Freedomworks.

Could such a “Texas Size” upset happen in our state? We would be fooling ourselves if we said yes at this time. But it can if we understand the dynamics needed for defeating the death-grip, political machines have had for so many, many years. In essence, isn’t that why we are in this fight to shape a new political reality where the people decide who should serve rather than a party? Do we not want to create a system where challengers are vetted so the best possible candidate is the one we put our support behind?

In order to defeat the machine that is party politics and the money and resources that are behind it, takes 3 things. A candidate who can educate, motivate, and communicate. It also takes a grassroots network deep and wide enough to carry a candidate to victory. The third ingredient needed is effort, a commitment and vision to know victory is possible through dedicated, united hard work.

Which component comes first? That depends. I would like to use the circumstances of the greatest American, George Washington, as an example. Washington as the leader of the continental army certainly educated, motivated, and communicated to his army at such an elite level that they would die for him. There was also a grassroots network of colonists who were willing to fight for freedom. Was victory only possible because of Washington or only because of his army? I would say both. Each needed the other. Men needed to be inspired, to believe in someone as well as something. Washington needed dedication to the cause and extreme effort and sacrifice from his army to achieve victory.

Washington answered the call of his time so we could have our time. The seeds of a new political reality, however, were shaped by many colonists years before the war and stated in the Declaration of Independence. We as Tea Party supporters are those colonists. We know the current system is broken and we are motivated to change it. In North Dakota, do we now wait for a “Washington” or “Cruz” to come around and lead us? I suggest we finish building a network (army) and from within we will find a “Washington” or a “Cruz”. We must connect with like-minded friends and neighbors and bring them into this caucus and through education and debate we will find conservatives who can lead and the army of support necessary for victory will already have been established.

All that is needed is to think BIG. Let us not sit around and wait for a leader to emerge before we commit to the fight. In North Dakota we will not feel the thrill experienced last night in Texas until we establish deep roots across our state. I know a “Cruz” is among us. I for one want to be ready when we find him/her. That foundation must be built by all of us, brick by brick. Let us shape this caucus as the place where all conservatives who believe in the Constitution across our state can unite. We will not experience a night like they did in Texas until we are all pushing in the same direction.

NDTPC joined several other conservative organizations in North Dakota to openly oppose the creation of state health exchanges. The exchanges are another part of Obamacare.

States can either form their own or have the federal government do it for them. “State-run” doesn’t mean North Dakota will have a real say in what the exchange will look like. The federal government will dictate what our options are, and how they must be administered. A “state-run” exchange means North Dakota will have to cover all of the cost and gain no authority.

North Dakota shouldn’t shoulder the burden of creating and administering a state exchange in response to Obamacare. We won’t have enough say in how it’s done to validate the costs involved.
